How to Build a Horse Racing Pace Map

A pace map is a projected picture of where each runner may settle and how much competition may develop near the lead. Its purpose is to make the likely race shape explicit before you judge which horses may be helped or inconvenienced.

Pace is not simply how fast a horse can run. In race analysis, it describes how speed is distributed and contested through the early, middle and late stages.

What a pace map actually shows

A pace map organises the field by expected position and running style. It asks who is likely to seek the lead, who may sit close behind, who may stalk the front group and who is usually held up for a later run. The result is a scenario, not a fixed forecast. Draw, tactics, the break and rider decisions can always change the shape after the gates open.

The value of mapping comes from comparison. One early-speed horse in a field can describe a very different problem from three runners that all prefer to lead. Likewise, a closer facing a strongly contested early pace is in a different structural situation from the same closer in a tactical race with no obvious leader.

Step 1: classify each runner's style

Use recent race comments, video and early positions rather than a single isolated run. Rhinoworth uses four simple categories:

A style should describe repeated behaviour, not your opinion of the horse's quality. A weak front-runner is still an E runner; a high-class closer is still an S runner.

Step 2: rate early speed and late strength

Style tells you where a horse prefers to race. A numerical rating helps distinguish intensity within the style. Two E runners may both seek the lead, but one may show much stronger early intent. Rate early speed from 1 to 10 using consistent evidence across the field. Then rate late strength separately to visualise how each profile may progress later.

Keep the scales relative. A rating of 8 should mean strong evidence compared with today's field and context. It should not become a permanent label copied unchanged into every race.

Step 3: build the projected map

  1. Enter every runner, including horses you do not intend to back.
  2. Assign a run style from repeated recent behaviour.
  3. Rate early speed and late strength on the same scale.
  4. Add draw information when it may influence the route to the first turn.
  5. Compare the number and strength of forward runners.

The map should reveal the structural question. Is there one obvious leader? Are two strong forward runners likely to compete? Is the field crowded with speed? Or is there no natural leader at all?

Four common race-shape scenarios

Lone Speed

One strong E runner appears to face limited competition for the early lead. This does not guarantee an easy trip, but it identifies the runner with the clearest chance to control the first part of the race.

Speed Duel

Two or more forward runners may contest the lead. The question becomes how much energy they may use against one another and which stalking profiles sit behind them.

Hot Pace

Several strong early profiles create substantial pressure. Pressers and closers may receive a more favourable setup if the leaders expend too much energy, but they still need the ability and position to use it.

Balanced or tactical pace

No extreme signal dominates. In such races, small tactical choices, position and acceleration may matter more than an obvious pace collapse or uncontested lead.

What a pace map cannot tell you

A pace map does not measure every factor that determines performance. It does not replace class, current form, distance suitability, surface, fitness, trouble risk or price. Treat it as one layer inside a wider handicapping process.

After the race, compare the projection with what happened. Did the expected leader break slowly? Did a rider use different tactics? Did the pace pressure materialise? This review is how a map becomes a learning tool rather than a decorative prediction.
